Review: Homecoming King by Penny Reid

Description:

Rex «TW» McMurtry’s perpetual single-hood wouldn’t bother him so much if all his ex-girlfriends didn’t keep marrying the very next person they dated, especially when so many of those grooms are his closest friends. He may be a pro-football defensive end for the Chicago Squalls, but the press only wants to talk about how he’s always a groomsman and never a groom. Rex is sick of being the guy before the husband, and he’s most definitely sick of being the best man at all their weddings.

Bartender Abigail McNerny is the gal-pal, the wing-woman, the she-BFF. She’s dated. Once. And once was more than enough. Privy to all the sad stories of her customers, ‘contentment over commitment’ is her motto, and Abby is convinced no one on earth could ever entice her into a romantic relationship . . . except that one guy she’s loved since preschool.

The guy who just walked into her bar.

The guy who doesn’t recognize her.

The guy who is drunk and needs a ride home.

The guy who has a proposition she should definitely refuse.

My opinion:

Homecoming King by Penny Reid is a cute holiday romance. It’s the first book from the Three Kings series.

Abby McNerny had a big crush on Rex McMurtry since elementary school. At her twenty-eight that hadn’t changed, she «stalked» him from afar every chance she got. Imagine her surprise when he stumbled inside the bar she was working. What she didn’t know that night was that her life was going to change in a very good way. Rex’s nickname from high school was used in a lewd way by a jerk on tv, he wanted to change that so he asked Abby to be his fake wife. Since she cared about him a lot she accepted. But could she keep lying to everyone and herself? Would she be able to move from her past and be with the man she loved since she was a kid?

This is a wonderful romantic story. It has a few tropes in it: friends-to-lovers, and forced proximity. The plot was so good and the romance was a slow burn. I liked that tiny dramatic flair, it added a lot to the story. Their chemistry was obvious and intense.
Their relationship was so easy and realistic. Them falling in love was like gravity, it just had to happen. The characters were truly amazing, both the main and the secondary. Abby and Rex had a lot in common: they had bad past experiences, they were too tall, couldn’t accept compliments… But it felt like they were made for each other. My favorite part was when he confessed his feelings and the Christmas party.

I fell in love with this book from the beginning and I didn’t want it to end. I highly recommend you to read it. I will rate it with 5 stars.
