After a risky affair cost me my self-respect, my credibility, and almost my job, I jump at the guidance counselor position that opens up in Uncle Keith’s small town. He’s the only father I’ve ever really known and the one I can turn to—even when I can’t tell him why.
No one here knows what a mess I am, and this clean slate seems perfect. At least until I run into my old crush, who’s only gotten better looking with age.
I won’t be another man’s dirty little secret, even if that crush I had as a teenager blossomed into something much more—something I can’t face.
Reasons Why Absolutely Nothing Can Happen Between Us:
1. Jake is the single dad of one of my new students.
2. Age gap. Age gap. Age gap.
3. He’s my uncle’s best friend.
I didn’t realize the curvy brunette I flirted with outside my son’s school was my buddy’s sweet, shy niece, all grown-up now. I know better than to get involved.
My marriage crumbled, leaving me and my son with damage we’re still repairing. The last thing I need is to start something with someone fourteen years younger. Did I mention she’s the police chief’s surrogate daughter?
I’m old enough to know better, but I can’t keep my hands off her. I never expected to fall this hard. Even though it’s all wrong, nothing has ever felt this right.

An Unexpected Turn by Stephanie Rose is an age-gap romance.
Peyton Miller used to work as a guidance counselor in Brooklyn. After a torrid affair that cost her her job, she moved to Kelly Lakes. She had hoped for a new beginning and a peaceful life. Of course that changed when she saw her teenage crush, Jake Russo. His fourteen-year-old son had recently moved there as well and he was going to the high school she was going to work at. They started meeting plenty of times at school and at her uncle’s house since he was his best friend. Her silly crush soon turned into lust and love. Jake felt the same way for her. Were they ready to move on from their past mistakes and be together despite the obstacles they were going to face?
It’s such a romantic story. A mix of small-town and age-gap romance. It’s a wonderfully written story that brings out different emotions. It made me swoon, laugh and cry while reading it. The romance was slow-build. Their «issues» and their secretive ways created anticipation that made the book more interesting to me. The characters were amazing, very likable, and relatable.
Jake was a great parent and a friend but also a caveman as a boyfriend. He was a sweet and sexy combination. Peyton was such a sweetheart and her love for the children was so admirable. I loved how she connected with all of them. The ending scene in the epilogue was one of my favorite parts, a sweet payback.
If you love small-town romance with some hot adult scenes then I highly recommend you this book. I will rate it with 4.5 stars.
