Review: The Rising by Kerry Peresta.

Description:

After an assault that landed her in the hospital as a Jane Doe two years earlier, Olivia Callahan has regained her speech, movement, and much of the memory she lost due to a traumatic brain injury. The media hype about the incident has faded away, and Olivia is ready to rebuild her life, but her therapist insists she must continue to look back in order to move forward. The only person that can help her recall specifics is her abusive ex-husband, Monty, who is in prison for murder. The thought of talking to Monty makes her skin crawl, but for her daughters’ sake and her own sanity, she must learn more about who she was before the attack.

Just as the pieces of her life start falling into place, she stumbles across the still-warm body of an old friend who has been gruesomely murdered. Her dream of pursuing a peaceful existence is shattered when she learns the killer left evidence behind to implicate her in the murder. The only person that would want to sabotage her is Monty—but he’s in prison! Something sinister is going on, and Olivia is desperate to figure it out before another senseless murder is committed.

My opinion:

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Rising by Kerry Peresta is a suspense novel. It’s the second book from the Olivia Callahan Suspense series.

It’s been almost two years since Olivia Callahan’s accident and amnesia and she was still trying to remember the missing parts. She couldn’t make any progress recently, she had writer’s block and thought to take a break and visit her mother and daughter in Richmond. Around that time strange and dangerous things started happening that had her scared and got a little paranoid. But that didn’t stop her from trying to move forward. Olivia decided to start working and soon she found her calling. Slowly and with the help of her family and friends her nightmare was coming to an end and her new life was beginning.

This is the perfect follow-up to the previous book. We get to see how a victim overcomes their fear and how deals with the new reality. I loved the mix of mystery and suspense along with the new family dynamics. It’s so easy to connect with the characters and engage with the storyline. It gives you the urge to play detective and unravel this mystery. I loved Olivia, she grew so much throughout the book and became this strong and resilient female figure.

Peresta’s writing skills are a big part of how good this book is. She has a unique way of transitioning between each scene and going from the first point of view to the third. The detailed descriptions of the important scenes were incredible and helpful for the reader.

If you love suspense novels give this series a chance and I guarantee you that you won’t regret it. I will rate it with 5 stars.
